MAREP UPDATES OF INTEREST TO LOCAL BOATERS

Meteorological Services of Canada may be improving the Continuous Marine Broadcast to include an all-encompassing forecast: so that weather info on wind, sea state, technical synopsis and outlook can be found in one place, rather than throughout the CMB; the Technical Marine Synopsis may be improved with geographical reference points rather than lat/long positions. Also CCG Pacific will be installing a CMB at Vancouver MCTS, using 2 peripheral transmitters: Harbour Centre (CH83B) and Watts Point (WX-1).

The recently announced de-staffing of certain light-stations across Canada has been put on hold pending a thorough review. Only 2 manned BC light-stations were under review: Entrance Island near Nanaimo and Dryad Point, just north of Bella Bella.

CCG intends to increase the number of navigational aids in Pitt Lake and the current plastic buoys will be replaced with steel ones with better visibility and radar reflectivity.

A new edition of Chart 3493 (Vancouver Hbr) is being prepared and release is planned for January 2010.

CHS is considering changes to the format of the Chart Catalogue (including the possible deletion of the list of Cdn/US chart dealers) and is seeking input from users.

Paper Notices to Mariners are in the process of being phased out by CCG since September and all paper NOTMAR’s will cease as of April 1, 2010.

CHS is changing its operations from a file-based system to a data-based system, resulting in increased efficiency when charts which overlap other charts of different scale are updated. This will also benefit the updating of e-charts.
