MARINE LIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

At our most recent Change of Watch evening I set up a Marine Identification Game. Although many people tried to guess at the names of the creatures, I was surprised that most had never even seen them before. As an avid local scuba-diver and amateur underwater photographer I enjoy photographing and learning about the marine life that inhabits our waters. I have come to realize that this knowledge leads to caring, and that in turn creates a desire to be more careful regarding our boating environmental practices.

My goal with this segment of the environment section of our website is to spread environmental awareness through knowledge and caring about the creatures that inhabit our local marine waters. I will regularly post some of my underwater photos with a brief description of the marine critters in the photos (see first issue below).

Underwater Critter Photos and Descriptions (Issue #1)

Indian Arm Black Shoal Environment (Issue #2)

My 'go to' books when I need more information or to confirm a sighting:

Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest by Andy Lamb and Phil Edgell, Harbour Publishing

Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest by Andy Lamb and Bernard Hanby, Harbour Publishing

Please feel free to contact me for any further information - I love to talk about the underwater realm. Val O'Shea:environment@burnabysquadron.com
