The Beginnings

The Charter for the "Burnaby Power Squadron" of the Canadian Power Squadrons was signed November 1st 1958 by the Chief Commander, E. T. Renouf and Secretary, Ross Irwin. It names the 10 founding members; Clyde W. Aitken, Daniel Anderson, Wes L. Bickerton, Kenneth Glover, Ivan Sorenson, Clifford B. Walker, David Creasy, John E. Jones, George C. and James W. Oliver.

The first Commander of the Squadron was Ivan Sorenson and the second was David Creasy. Both lived on Rumble Street in South Burnaby and meetings were held in the homes of the Commanders. The first recorded minutes are dated April 13/59 and read, in part:

"Treasurer's report by Ken Glover - Bank Balance - $106.59 exclusive of membership dues. Dan Anderson moved and Ivan Sorenson seconded the motion to accept the amended by-laws. All were in favor."

The Minutes of October 20/59 read:

"Bill McWilliams of W. G. McWilliams Ltd. officially presented the Burnaby Squadron with its ship's bell which W.G. McWilliams donated. Commander Sorenson accepted the bell on behalf of the Squadron."

As early as January 5/60, Lifetime member Gordon Springate was mentioned in the minutes:

"Gordon Springate, Gary McDonald Clyde Aitkens and Ivan Sorenson volunteered to cover the remaining lectures."

Gordon became Commander of District in 1967-68 and Squadron Commander in 1968-69.

The earliest Squadron Newsletter, "The Scuttlebutt" in the files is dated 1981, but it could have been earlier, but we have no records.
